On the road to nowhere? Infrastructure and other issues in Timor-Leste

by

November is the month of the long weekend in Timor-Leste (I know it’s now December, but work with me on this one…). You can’t go a week without having at least a day off and when the inevitable five day working week comes around again it’s a bit of a tough slog. So, what to do with so many three day weekends when in Timor-Leste?

President Ramos-Horta visits Peace Dividend Trust

by

The Peace Dividend Trust office was abuzz yesterday as it received a visit from perhaps its most prestigious supporter, President Ramos-Horta.

Insuring the growth of Timor-Leste’s Economy

by

My Senior Advisor at Peace Dividend Trust, Edward Rees, was blogging yesterday about the signs of growth in the Timorese economy. So, in between reconciling the number of businesses we now have in the new Timor-Leste Business Portal since the upgrade was completed last month (almost 2,800 and growing, by the way!!), I started thinking about the bigger picture too.

PDT and UNDP Construction Industry Training Session – How did we go???

by

As mentioned on our blog spot yesterday, Peace Dividend Trust Timor-Leste (PDT) and the United Nations Development Program Timor-Leste (UNDP) ran a joint training session with PDT registered businesses involved in the construction industry which have shown an interest in tendering for UNDP contracts. The day was a success and was a hugely positive step forward for the involvement of Timorese businesses in the rebuilding their own country.

PDT’s Brigida Soares attends the East-West Centre ‘Changing Faces Women’s Leadership Seminar’

by

When former PDT’er Mike Leach contacted the Dili office to find out if there was a staff member that would be suitable to attend the East-West Centre’s ‘Changing Faces: Women’s Leadership Program’ to be held in Hawaii, there was one lady that instantly came to mind. And so it was last Monday that Peace Dividend Trust Timor-Leste staff member, Brigida Soares, departed Dili to begin her journey to Honolulu.

Two years on – What’s happening with PDT registered businesses?

by

Back in 2008, when the PDM-TL team was first getting established in Timor-Leste, the three businesses owned by Timorese business woman Maria Carla Consalves Tilman, Carla Mansion Guest House, Arvec Construction, Lda and Prima Truss, Lda, were all registered with our online database for the first time.

Time to start using PDT’s new and improved business portal!

When I was offered the placement at Peace Dividend Trust (PDT) at the start of this year through the Australian Youth Ambassador for Development (AYAD) program, I was sent down to Canberra for Pre-Departure Training (which also, funnily enough, has the acronym PDT – this, let me tell you, caused a great deal of confusion during the interview!) and was briefed on the issues that arise when working within a developing country. How hard could it be, I thought? How hard indeed…..

Peace Dividend Trust at ‘Bringing Supply and Demand Together for Kitan’ Conference

by

Last week was pretty busy for myself and colleagues Ilidio Ximenes (Deputy director – PDT Dili) and Edward Rees (Senior Advisor – PDT), with Peace Dividend Trust (PDT) receiving an invitation to speak at the ‘Bringing Supply and Demand together for Kitan’ conference held in Dili on Wednesday and Darwin on Thursday. The conferences were co-hosted by the Autoridade Nacional do Petroleo (ANP) and eni and signaled a positive approach by the oil company to engage with local business.

From Chancery Lane to Ainaro – The Need for Information Is Still The Same.

by

It’s a long commute from my old office in Chancery Lane, London in the UK, to the town of Ainaro, Timor-Leste, especially when you throw in a quick stop over at my parents’ sheep and cattle farm in south-eastern New South Wales, Australia for a stint working in the shearing shed. But that’s how it happened that, after my initial thought of working in a developing country 12 months ago, I found myself in Ainaro with my new work colleagues from Peace Dividend Trust.
