Get Ready to Get Sporty

Many believe that sports and politics are intrinsically intertwined. Whether it’s one country exerting its prowess and glory through an opening ceremony (thank you, CGI Fireworks), or a soccer team in 1966 proving to the world that they, and through them their country, should be taken seriously. (Unfortunately, that was not to be repeated in 2010.) So it’s no wonder that the Office of the President in Timor-Leste has taken up the campaign to draw sporting fans into Dili “City of Peace”, not only to demonstrate that the capital now lives up to its namesake but to put Dili on the map and entice tourist to spend their dollars exploring Asia’s youngest nation.

Recently, the Office of the President hosted the first annual Dili International Marathon, with over 1000 runners hailing from 28 different countries participating. The weekend was quite busy for the PDT team as we, along with several other NGOs and local organizations, were manning a booth at the Marathon Expo the day before the race. This was a great opportunity to get the “Buy Local. Build Timor-Leste” message out there and let people know about the launch of our new, revamped business portal, which is now up and running at BuildingMarkets.org. Click here more about the new improved business portal.

Next on the list of events is the Darwin Dili Yacht Rally sailing into Dili this week, which is then to be followed by the second annual Tour de Timor in September. And if you’re coming to Dili and want to check out what’s available in terms of hotels, shopping, dining, etc., remember that BuildingMarkets.org has answers!
