Job Summary

A sales-driven manager with a proven track record of assisting businesses in finding new customers and markets, the Business Development Manager (BDM) should be a quick learner and be able to assess both the demand and supply-side of a market to identify quick wins. The ideal candidate is an extrovert, loves to succeed and to help others win, is excited about solving problems, and knows how to hustle. The BDM will have excellent communication skills, enjoys building a large network, and can cultivate strong relationships among a wide-range of clients and stakeholders (institutional buyers, investors, and local companies).

This is a job that does not involve sitting behind a desk (much). The BDM will oversee Building Markets’ business development initiatives. This will include leveraging its existing matchmaking strategies that have led to SMEs winning over $1.3bn in contracts. To do this, the BDM will be making in-person introductions, hosting matchmaking events, producing matchmaking reports, providing tender distribution services, and ensuring engagement on Building Markets’ online matchmaking platform.

The BDM reports to the Country Director and will have a minimum of 5-years’ experience working in the private sector, ideally with SMEs.

Responsibilities and Duties


  • Map key Turkish and regional markets (size, accessibility, major institutional buyers, local suppliers) and develop a comprehensive knowledge base of high growth and job intensive sectors that offer opportunities to refugee and Syrian-owned businesses and individuals;

  • Develop forecasts for existing and future procurement needs in priority sectors; 

  • Translate trends in procurement needs into practical strategies that ensure efficient business processes and high-value services targeting Building Markets’ business network and partners;

  • Provide input to improve the overall strategy and efficiency of the Building Markets program.

Business Development

  • Develop and implement business development plans for each viable target sector and institutional buyer;

  • Develop and maintain excellent working relationships with institutional buyers, large companies and investors, including the promotion of Building Markets’ services;

  • Coordinate the expansion of Building Markets’ business network through additional business verification and profiling on;

  • Design events that showcase Syrian and refugee-led businesses and create concrete opportunities for them in the Turkish market.

Staff Management

  • Supervise and mentor the Business Development Associate(s).  

  • Carry out regular performance appraisals of direct reports.

Tracking and Reporting

  • Ensure efficient systems are in place to track results and impact;

  • Oversee data gathering, follow-up with buyers, investors, and vendors, and ensure accuracy and effectiveness of data management;

  • Gather, verify and compile monthly quantitative and qualitative reporting from staff whose work feeds directly into strategies that improve engagement, understanding, and products targeting businesses and their prospective clients;

  • Ensure results and success stories are catalogued and provided to the communications team in a timely manner; 

  • Ensure information flow to support advocacy opportunities for targeted businesses. 

Reporting Lines

Reports to: Country Director

Supervisory: Oversees up to 3 employees.

Required Qualifications 

  • Master’s Degree in Business Administration, related field or substantial equivalent in professional experience;

  • Familiarity with Turkish market;

  • Existing relationships with industry representatives, and able to leverage networks to cultivate business contacts;

  • Motivated self-starter, capable of leading initiatives from inception to results;

  • Demonstrable experience in organizational representation and business development;

  • Strong analytical and writing skills;

  • Experience leading initiatives in the region with a private sector focus;

  • Fluency in English and Turkish (spoken);

  • Ability to perform multiple tasks and meet critical deadlines, while maintaining accuracy and quality.

Desired Qualifications

  • Sales experience; 

  • Familiarity with exporter industries;

  • Arabic language skills;

  • Experience working with civil society in Turkey or similar context.


  • Travel within Turkey, and possibly the region.
