Context

Building Markets is an award-winning non-profit organization that creates jobs and encourages economic growth in crisis-affected economies by connecting competitive local small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) to new opportunities. Through its approach, the organization has built a network of more than 26,000 verified SMEs, assisted them in winning over $1.3 billion in contracts, and helped create over 70,000 jobs in Afghanistan, Haiti, Liberia, Mozambique, Myanmar, and Timor-Leste. Building Markets is headquartered in New York City. For more information, visit www.buildingmarkets.org.

Building Markets is operating in Yangon since 2012 and has profiled more than 3,500 businesses in Myanmar, helping hundreds of local SMEs to find new clients and get new contracts. We are seeking resourceful and motivated staffs, interested in private sector development, to participate to our program over the next 12 months.

In 2018, with funding from Coca-Cola Foundation, Building Markets doubled-down on the waste management and recycling sector, which presents a serious environmental problem as well as an economic opportunity for Myanmar. Since launch, the program has generated indirect and direct outcomes for 137 SMEs including enhancing business practices, increasing the amount of recyclable items collected, diverting recyclable material from landfills, enabling access to markets, improving health and safety conditions, and engaging communities to become stakeholders in the reduction of waste.

Following the successful completion of the first phase of this program, Building Markets is currently focused on expanding its work to new sectors, locations and services, all with a view to reduce waste, keep recyclable material out of landfills, while supporting the businesses and entrepreneurs who make that happen.

We are growing our small team, and are hiring for several new positions that will help us achieve some ambitious goals. If you are passionate about supporting small businesses, care about the planet and are hungry to join a close-knit team who enjoy working together to tackle some pretty big problems, this is the job for you!

Job Summary

The Business Matchmaking Officer is responsible for connecting buyers with potential suppliers. This is a key role in the Building Markets’ program. Based on a buyer’s brief (what a buyer wants to purchase), the Business Matchmaking Officer searches the marketplace starting with Building Markets’ own extensive database of businesses, for existing suppliers of goods and services, assessing the capacity and willingness of prospective suppliers to fulfill the buyer’s brief, and preparing a ‘matchmaking report’, which is a summary of recommendations to the buyer, informing which potential suppliers can best fulfill their brief.

This is a job where you need to be proactive. You need to think ten steps ahead. You need to understand what the buyer wants even when sometimes, the buyer doesn’t know what they want. You need to then help them find what they want, and fast.

The Business Matchmaking Officer is directly accountable for program achievements and results. Why? Because when you help a buyer find a match, that match translates into revenue for a business, helping that business grow – whether expanding their operations, hiring new employees, or reinvesting in their businesses. This is a job where you get to be directly involved in activities that produce the results.
