Job Summary

The Research Manager oversees the extensive data that Building Markets collects in Turkey to operate its program and measure its impact. In addition to excellent research and data management skills, the ideal candidate is passionate about private sector development and knows how to use data to influence opinion and behaviors. This includes designing and producing research products that highlight trends, challenges and opportunities in the local market – particularly related to increasing jobs and business opportunities for Syrian and migrant entrepreneurs. 


The Research Manager will produce monthly snapshots on Building Markets’ business network, ensure quality control of the impact and process data Building Markets and its partners collect, and will make recommendations on opportunities to improve products and services. The Research Manager reports to the Country Director and supervises the monitoring and evaluation focal point and business verification team.

Responsibilities and Duties

Research Development and Implementation

  • Manage in-country surveying, including training of enumerators;

  • Ensure process for business verification is conducted in line with Building Markets’ standards;

  • For new research products, lead technical inputs, including undertaking desk research, initial survey design, identifying appropriate data collection tools and tracking systems, data analysis and statistical analysis, and report writing;

  • Generate monthly analysis and figures of Building Markets’ business network;

  • Manage data quality control processes while exceeding in-person survey targets;

  • Conduct interviews with stakeholders as needed to assess impact and highlight challenges and opportunities in the local market;

  • Ensure monthly impact targets are correct by thoroughly reviewing Building Markets and partner inputs;

  • Provide partners guidance on data collection methods where needed;

  • Where research and data can improve products and services, document guidance;

  • Provide analysis and input into Building Markets’ donor reports.

  • Support proposal development processes;

  • Provide input to communications products and outcomes;

  • Oversee case studies, including working with the communications team to identify strong candidates;

  • Support cleaning, reviewing and uploading data to Building Markets online platforms (SalesForce, matchmaking platform), as required;

  • Ensure all data and related resources are archived on Google Drive.



  • Support continuous improvement efforts to update research methodologies, data collection practices, and data management systems;

  • Document best practices and refine guidance materials; 

  • Provide statistics and analytics about online platforms and user engagement;

  • Provide input to improve the overall strategy and efficiency of the Turkey program;

  • Represent Building Markets at events, including trade fairs, conferences, and meetings.

Reporting Lines

Reports to: Country Director

Supervisory: Oversees 2-6 employees.

Required Qualifications 

  • Degree in Statistics, Finance, Business Administration, or related field;

  • Demonstrated statistical, analytical, and research skills;

  • Excellent writing skills, including the ability to communicate complex concepts in clear and concise language;

  • Experience leading large-scale market research projects in the region;

  • Experience designing and directing training of enumerators;

  • Fluency in English (written and spoken);

  • Must be detail-oriented with strong organizational and time-management skills.

Desired Qualifications

  • Arabic language skills;

  • Turkish language skills;

  • Research related to refugee entrepreneurship;

  • Experience working with civil society in Turkey or in a similar context;

  • Proficiency managing large datasets and data software, including SalesForce.


  • Possible travel in-country


  • Salary commensurate with experience
