One thing we’re keen to do on Building Markets’ country blogs is help you get to know the people behind each project’s success. We like to talk about success, but we also want to showcase the people who are directly responsible for it. With our newest project in Liberia ramping up, we’re taking the opportunity to do that right from the start. Every Monday and Thursday we will introduce you to a member of the team in Liberia through this blog. Read on for one profile below.

Kula Thompson-Williams was born in Liberia but spent much of her life in the United States. In the US Kula taught college courses and worked with children on the weekends. Since then she has moved back to Liberia and is enthusiastic about working with Building Markets.

“Building Markets is an exciting opportunity to powerfully educate and empower others in the private and public sectors of Liberia,” Kula says.

As the Senior Training Associate at Building Markets, Kula is responsible for updating training materials and administering the training of local suppliers. The Sustainable Marketplace Initiative teaches local suppliers about basic procurement principles and procedures, including all the required elements of a proposal to bid on an international contract. This is important in developing countries where education and experience is low and procurement processes are complex and often difficult to understand.

Kula also explains why this is important; “Opportunities such as the Sustainable Marketplace Initiative exist so that business people learn improved methods of presenting their products, growing their money and the Liberian economy, thereby sustaining the life of their businesses.”

When Kula is not working she enjoys reading and writing and “helping others do the same.” Her favorite dish is cassava and fish gravy, with a big yum! And her advice to anyone visiting Liberia is that he or she will have to “drive through and endure the madness of traffic at Red light, Paynesville.” Sounds painful!
