Metacool: Energy Efficiency in a Rebuilding Haiti / Metacool : Consommation Énergétique Réduite dans une Haïti en Reconstruction

After taking a training course in 2009 offered by York International on installation and operation of energy-efficient air conditioning systems, Beauvil Marckenson and three colleagues were inspired to pool their savings and open Metacool Services and Controls in Port-au-Prince.

Marckenson thought his gamble was a sure bet: Air conditioning accounts for an estimated 50 percent of a firm’s energy costs, so surely there would be a market in Haiti for systems manufactured by a reputable U.S. firm that use 20 to 30 percent less fuel and refrigerant, reduce energy costs, and protect the environment.

A year later, in the aftermath of the devastating earthquake of January 12, 2010, Metacool’s new offices and stock were destroyed and their start-up costs wiped out. “We lost almost everything, and we had no customers,” Marckenson recalled.

“We had to start from zero.”

Unable to obtain financing and without resources for advertising, Marckenson turned instead to Peace Dividend Marketplace-Haiti. He registered Metacool on the PDM-H online directory, attended training on the bidding procedures of international organizations, and started responding to the tenders posted on the PDM-H website.

“We had never seen this kind of service in Haiti,” he explained. “When you open a small business here, it is on you to find customers. PDM-H represented a way for us to get the word out. We just didn’t have the capacity to do what PDM-H was able to do for us.”

Metacool has indeed found customers, including four contracts with the United Nations Development Program for air conditioning at the UN logbase and at a police base in Leogone; another with German Technical Cooperation (GIZ), also for the national police; and a smaller contract directly with the Haitian Ministry of Justice. Additional bids are pending with the Food and Agriculture Organization and PSI Haiti, among others.

In all, Marckenson estimates that Metacool has installed 40 air-conditioning systems since registering with PDM-H. The company now works with four different subcontracters while working out of a modest storefront in Delmas, which keeps overhead costs low.  Marckenson, pictured above at the entrance to Metacool,  believes the business is growing because customers in a rebuilding Haiti are buying into the value of energy efficiency.

But he also credits PDM-H with helping to get Metacool back on its feet when all seemed lost.

“You can be as good as you want at what you do, but if you don’t get the word out you won’t have customers and you won’t make it,” he said. “PDM-H has been a window to the world for us.” //
