When former PDT’er Mike Leach contacted the Dili office to find out if there was a staff member that would be suitable to attend the East-West Centre’s ‘Changing Faces Women’s Leadership Seminar’ to be held in Hawaii, there was one lady that instantly came to mind. And so it was that last Monday Peace Dividend Trust Timor-Leste staff member, Brigida Soares, departed Dili Airport for the first time to begin her journey to Honolulu.

The ‘Changing Faces Women’s Leadership Seminar’ was established in 2002 in order to bring together women from America and the Asia Pacific region to discuss issues relevant to women within leadership roles. The program seeks women who are involved in medium/ senior level leadership roles that have the proven ability to affect change within their communities. Brigida’s involvement is a wonderful opportunity for her to share the issues affecting women in Timor-Leste with the nine other women attending from countries such as Taiwan, Mongolia and the US, as well as to gain insight into the issues that they face.

Brigida’s role as a Matchmaking Associate in the PDM-TL has given her a significant insight into the role that women play in business, both within the government and privately, here in Timor-Leste. The presentation that she will make positively focuses on the rebuilding of peace in Timor-Leste and the role that business development plays in achieving this. It’s with great pleasure that she is able to use the numerous business success stories that PDT was able to help facilitate through the well known campaign, ‘Buy Local. Build Timor-Leste.’, in order to discuss these issues.

Congratulations to Brigida for being selected to attend and we look forward to an update in the Market Info section of our new business portal when she returns!
