Supplier Of The Month – Ms. Khin Win Cho of Basin International Co.

We recently sat down for a chat with Ms. Khin Win Cho, Director of Basin International Co. in Yangon. A large part of Basin’s business comes from their role as a supplier to humanitarian organizations and UN agencies in Myanmar.

After learning about Building Markets services via word-of-mouth, Ms. Cho participated in our business verification process in order to get included in our database of verified local suppliers. As a supplier, Basin often finds it difficult to source suitable medical supplies locally, and typically imports such items (hygienic kits and similar items). Items Basin sources locally in Myanmar include basic consumer items, paper supplies, etc.

In what has quickly become a more competitive market, Basin has to stay current on new organizational buyers and contract opportunities. “Now, so many competitors have come. We have to source from even more suppliers to get the good prices. With so many NGOs coming, we have to find identify the new NGOs… Building Markets helps us identify the new NGOs looking for supplies,” said Ms. Cho.

“Last time, for example, Building Markets sent us the tender information for Save The Children – from Building Markets matchmaking officer. Currently, we are working on a Lutheran World Federation contract. We also discovered this through Building Markets. Sometimes we don’t see the [tender] notice in the journal but Building Markets helps to inform us about these opportunities… We are receiving more customers because of Building Markets.”

At Building Markets, we work with local suppliers of many sorts. We are currently working with nearly 600 local businesses in the greater Yangon region – actively linking these businesses with buyers. Why do we care? Ask Basin. They are a small company, but whenever they undertake a new large contract they hire more warehouse staff to fulfill the order.

“I want to grow our business and Building Markets helps us,” said Ms. Cho. Helping businesses grow and seeing them create new job opportunities – that’s exactly what we are in Myanmar to do.
