Taking to the Airwaves Part II

As written in an earlier post, radio is very powerful in Liberia, which is why we created a series of radio dramas explaining Building Markets’ services in Liberian English. But we didn’t stop there. We’ve teamed up with Voice of Firestone’s live business-themed talk show called the Marketplace, a very fitting title for the Sustainable Marketplace Initiative Liberia. The show airs on 89.5 FM.

Hosted by Kerkula Mulbah, the show provides an exciting opportunity for Building Markets to promote the Buy Local, Build Liberia message, while educating business owners throughout Montserrado, Margibi and Grand Bassa counties. Every other Friday morning from 9-10 a.m., Building Markets brings guests to the Harbel radio station to talk about a variety of business-related issues.

Today, we are going to share one of our favorite shows featuring our very own Training Manager Kula Thompson-Williams, who was there to educate listeners about how to win contracts through the formal bidding process. To make the process more educational and inspiring to listeners, we invited a true expert of bidding onto the show: Alphonso Kamara. Alphonso runs a micro-sized waste collection company called Environmental Services Enterprise, Inc. After attending Kula’s general procurement training, he began bidding on tenders. Despite the micro size of his business, Alphonso has been quite successful in winning tenders with buyers like the United Nations, Monrovia City Corporation and Save the Children.

Below are a few of the most interesting snippets from the show. First, host Kerkula asks Kula to explain the bidding process.

How do you properly fill out a bid?

Now listen to Alphonso Kamara’s experience with the bidding process. Though it’s 8 minutes long, it’s well worth the listen!

One last tip from Kula: know your competition.

And Alphonso’s parting comments.
