Susan D. Maples is a legal and commercial advisor specializing in the representation of sovereign nations at Curtis, Mallet-Prevost, Colt & Mosle LLP. Having worked in over 30 countries around the world and on 6 continents, Susan has experience with governments and state-owned companies on law, policy, economic growth, transactions and negotiations and disputes.
Some examples of this work include: living and working in Liberia, in the Office of the Legal Advisor to the President of Liberia, Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf. Susan worked with the Government of South Sudan on the feasibility study of an alternative route to export its petroleum; she has assisted Afghanistan in monitoring its contractual terms with its Contract partners; and led the team that drafted the next generation model contract in Timor-Leste as well as assisted in the strategic discussions surrounding the Field Development Plan for the Greater Sunrise project. Susan has seen first hand the impact of Building Markets in a number of these countries and is honoured to support the Organization's work as a member of the Board.
