Small Businesses Unite to Feed Displaced Earthquake Survivors During Ramadan

April 11, 2023 | Building Markets

The earthquakes which devastated communities in Türkiye and Syria have left numerous people without access to basic necessities such as food and shelter. Among those displaced by the earthquake, the majority are Muslim and currently observing Ramadan. Yet for families displaced by the earthquake, their situation is dire as they struggle to find enough food to break their daily fasts. Fasting is central to Ramadan, but no one should go hungry past sunset.

Iftar – the evening meal after fasting all day during Ramadan – is a special time to connect and reflect. Through the Emergency Relief Fund, Building Markets will be delivering 7,500 iftar meals to earthquake victims who recently relocated to Istanbul.  Meal delivery will be done in partnership with Türkiye’s International Restaurant Association (IRA). The recipients of these meals are widows, orphans, and disadvantaged families, who are among the most vulnerable groups affected by the disaster.

Local restaurants, which are both members of the IRA and Building Markets’ network of small businesses, and are being delivered directly to those in need. What’s even more inspiring is the variety of nutritious and delicious meals that are being provided to those in need. From Mandi chicken rice and chicken molokhia, to meatballs with yogurt and maklube with vegetables, each dish is crafted with care and the flavors of home.

This is more than just a meal delivery service, it showcases the resilience and generosity of businesses that have been hit hard by recent challenges. By providing food to those in need, the participating restaurants are not only filling empty stomachs, but also helping to rebuild communities.

It is inspiring to witness these businesses banding together to make a real difference in people’s lives. Their commitment to the well-being of their communities demonstrate that small businesses can have a positive impact on society. In times of crisis, such initiatives provide hope and comfort, remind us of the power of unity and collaboration, and demonstrate the power of small business to drive inclusive growth and empower disadvantaged populations, allowing their families and communities to thrive.

By coming together and working towards a common goal, we can make a real difference in the lives of those who need it most. Together, we can build a stronger, more resilient community.
