Economist-in-Residence

Onur Altındağ is an economist specializing in population health, public policy, and social protection. He is an Associate Professor of Economics at Bentley University and is currently on sabbatical for the 2024-2025 academic year. During this time, he is a Visiting Scholar at the Harvard Center for Population and Development Studies and serves as Building Markets' first Economist-in-Residence.

As Building Markets’ Economist-in-Residence, Onur applies his expertise to advance the organization’s learning agenda. He advises on research design and methodology, supports data analysis to address priority research questions, and explores new areas of inquiry. He is collaborating with the Building Markets team to enhance their data infrastructure, incorporating AI to improve firm-to-buyer matchmaking. Additionally, he is part of a research team studying the impact of firm-to-firm matchmaking on social cohesion between Turkish and Syrian-owned firms in southeast Türkiye.

Onur is affiliated with the Institute for the Study of Labor (IZA), the Households in Conflict Network (HiCN), and the Economic Research Forum (ERF). He is also an invited researcher for J-PAL & IPA’s Displaced Livelihoods Initiative (DLI) and the Humanitarian Protection Initiative (HPI).
