So when was the last time that you heard of a business sponsoring the advertising of other business? Including potential competitors? I would wager not very often.
Well, I need to report to you that that is exactly what has happened in Timor-Leste. Business appears increasingly interested in engaging with the wider national development agenda in Timor-Leste by making a material effort to boost business activity across all sectors in Timor-Leste. By “material” – I mean cold hard cash.
So what am I nattering on about? Well global logistics giant SDV has recently commenced sponsorship of the Timor-Leste Business Portal, which the Peace Dividend Marketplace project has developed in partnership with the Ministry of Tourism, Commerce, and Industry (MTCI).
Well in October 2010 I blogged about the Top 50 most visited pages on the Timor-Leste Business Portal, and within a few hours a senior representative from SDV based in Singapore emailed me with good and bad news.
Bad news first – we had details on the SDV business card wrong or out of date. Actually this is not such bad news really, we encourage business to visit their business card on the site and tell us if we have it right or wrong – corrections/updates are always welcome. What was the outright good news? He wanted to explore sponsorship possibilities.
SDV is the first company to sponsor the Timor-Leste Business Portal and is demonstrating real support for the importance of buying local and developing the domestic private sector in Timor-Leste. Its a further sign of growing investor confidence in Timor-Leste. Certainly there are many challenges to doing business in Timor-Leste, but these are being addressed and highlighted every day.
This sponsorship plays a small but important role in showing people that doing business in Timor-Leste is possible and much of the time, profitable. SDV has swung behind over 3,000 businesses in Timor-Leste and is sponsoring what is for many of them, their only online presence; on what is Timor-Leste’s premier business listings site, with access to jobs, tenders, matchmaking services just to name a few.
