In the heart of southern Türkiye, Zemzem Bakery was a bustling hub, renowned for its delicious Syrian bread under Mohammad Noor’s guidance. Mohammad says, “the bakery isn’t just a business; it’s a part of who we are. It’s about sharing a taste of home, offering daily nourishment and comfort to everyone here.”

However, everything changed when an earthquake struck in February 2023, throwing the bakery into chaos.

“Post-earthquake, everything was a challenge. Our workspace was in ruins, and the machines we depended on were badly damaged. The earthquake brought not only physical damage but also a loss of workforce. Workers left for better-paying jobs in construction. It became a struggle to find and retain hands,” Mohammad said.

Rebuilding was a challenge, especially with financial strain and a shortage of labor. But Mohammad was determined to bring Zemzem Bakery back to life.

Building Markets played a crucial role by providing two grants to Zemzem Bakery. The first grant helped cover immediate expenses, while the second grant enabled the bakery to buy a generator to deal with electricity issues.

“The grants were timely and immensely helpful,” said Mohammad. They provided not just financial support but a renewed sense of hope to Mohammad and the community.

Today, the bakery stands resilient, filling the air once again with the irresistible scent of freshly baked Syrian bread. In the earthquake-affected region, Zemzem Bakery’s success is a testament to the strength of community ties and the transformative power of support during challenging times.
